Minutes of the Rincon Heights Neighborhood Association


February 16, 2010


The meeting was called to order by Tim Olcott at 7:00 PM with welcome and introductions.


1.      Police reports:  TPD said that in January, one stolen vehicle and 2 burglaries were reported in the NH.  Between October and the end of the year, there were 18 thefts from vehicles which is slightly higher than usual.  The officer was asked about the red tag program as UA had stated at the last CCRC meeting that they were no longer getting student conduct cases reported to them from TPD.  He replied that UA had requested reports be suspended as they were getting too many of them.

2.      Minutes:  Meeting minutes from December and January were approved.

3.      Treasurer’s report:  Michael Carson stated that we had received $2500 from ProNeighborhoods.  We have paid a $10 tax filing fee.  The treasury stands at $3591.15.  He and Chris Wilke will keep an accounting of the grant $.  The treasurer’s report was approved.

4.  Committee reports:
·         CCRC:  On April 18, there will be a community event, Cyclovia, which will involve temporary closure of a network of streets to promote people walking and biking in the area.  It will be located north and west of the university.

The historic designation challenge in the legislature has received a lot of negative response.  The proposed changes would probably NOT generate revenue anyway.

 Environmental services from the city gave a presentation.  On the first Saturday of the month between 8 and noon, they accept hazardous waste at Tucson Water on Irvington .  They will pick it up for a $55 fee.

On March 27, there will be a solar rock function at Himmel Park.

The dean of students reported that TPD no longer informs them of red tags and other student conduct violations.

UA dept. of Transpo., in partnership with Hertz has a zip car program that makes a rental available for $5 an hour.

The football practice field expansion is proceeding.  Sam Hughes and RH have requested a cpac to look at impact on the NH.  The meeting is scheduled for Feb. 22 at 6:00 in room 233A-1 in McKale Center.

·         University relations:  Following a meeting with supervisor Elias and some of his staff, president Shelton was contacted and a meeting has been scheduled with him for Feb. 18, to address concerns about MOU violations.

·         Block Party:  Penny has sent out information on the listserv and facebook for this event on April 24.

·         Neighborhood watch:  There will be a meeting for neighborhood watch at Penny’s on Saturday, March 13 from 2:00 to 4:00.  We should get signs after this meeting.

5.      New business:  Adam Springer from UA school of natural resources is looking at household water conservation.  He is conducting a survey and would like to get at least 500 responses.  He distributed his survey to us.

6.      Unfinished business:

·         It was moved and seconded that RH cooperate with the bike path proposal and recommendations presented at the Jan meeting.  The motion passed.  Tim will contact D. Kriegel.

·         The mortarboard project will be cleaning bump outs on 9th and 10th streets.  The event will be on March 27.  NH volunteers will be needed as well.  Mike will give us more information next month.

7.      Announcements:

·         The dedication and recognition event sponsored by the county will follow a planting on Feb. 20.  The planting will start at 8:30 and the “party” will follow at 10:30 at the corner of 10th and Cherry.

·         RHNA website is under construction but can access calendar and announcements.  E-mail addresses of NH officers will be added and there is also a comment section, which will be monitored by Tom P. for now.

·         There will be an open house at our ward council office on Feb. 18 at 4:00 to 7:00.

Next month’s meeting will be on Tuesday, March 16, at Ha:san school.
